What do you consider a good softball batting average?....I know that softball averages are higher than baseball averages. But say, in baseball terms, a "ok" hitter hits about .240, a "good" hitter hits about .280, and a "great" hitter hits about .320 and above. What would be the softball equivalent of "ok", "good" "great"

The average MLB batting average has been about .260 (give or take a few points) just about every year for the past 100 years. I would say .260 is your "ok" hitter. I am interested in hearing responses to this one.

If you even bother with batting average (and MLB teams certainly don't use it to any serious degree), you can't really answer this without knowing what level you're talking about. The baseball numbers you're talking about are for the MLB level. D1 batting averages are higher (.270 in 2018). MLB's batting average in 2019 was .252.

If I showed you our varsity team's stats, you'd think I've had a couple of absolute world-beaters. They wouldn't hit .200 on an A level team.

Gotta know the context. Gotta know the competition. There's really no right answer here.

I think there's also a big difference in stats with college teams playing strong teams vs lower teams. Lots of strong D1 teams will play lower level D1 teams and destroy them. So you'll see girls with 400+ batting averages for the season. Those stats don't tend to quite hold up when it's two top teams playing each other.

In my personal experience with a DD in 18uA travel, I'd say 300+ is a good batter. 400+ is a great batter.

In HS-age sports, be it school ball or travel, I always take any stat with a grain of salt. Typically the score-keeper is a parent or coach who does not fully understand the intricacies of keeping the book.

Also I agree with Coach JD, in HS the conferences vary so much between each other and also within each other. You typically will see 1-2 "powerhouse" teams that blow every one else away. Tough to know (if you can't be present at the games) if the teams are truly that good, or do they just play in a weaker conference? Same with travel - who exactly are they playing and at what level?

The higher the level, the lower the threshold to being a "great hitter". I saw an 8 year old hit .700 this year in 10B. The worst hitters on the team were hovering around .300, most were in the .400s. That won't hold up as they transition to A, or any 12U level, as the pitchers and defense get better. I'm guessing a 16A team with their entire lineup hitting .300+ would be considered exceptional. In 10U it's pretty decent.

OP is talking about now, not 1955 (yes I know you are not that old..just giving you a tough time )

I guess the main question to OP is why are you asking? I know whether
or not my DD is swinging well by how she is swinging, not by her BA.
